SHOPFLOOR INSPECTION
‘QM-Fit has been built for speed, accuracy and simplicity.’
FASTER SMALLER SMARTER
PRACTICAL ENGINEERING BENEFITS “Most of the time in inspection is wasted on non-value activities such as aligning parts, focussing and inputting element definitions,” says Darren. QM-Fit’s goal is to collapse those overheads. Because it recognises the part, features and elements immediately, engineers can begin measuring almost straight away after placing the component on the stage. That speeds up throughput in labs and quality control environments. QM-Fit also allows for procedure recording. Once you measure one workpiece, the system can record that procedure so that subsequent parts can be inspected automatically, even if they are randomly placed on the stage. That helps especially in short runs or when repeatability matters. Built-in traceability and environmental correction ensure that measurements remain stable even when conditions drift from the ideal. For industries with tight quality or regulatory requirements, that consistency is crucial.
“The QM-Fit is an exceptional addition to the Mitutoyo Vision range. It is a smart, compact manual vision system with intuitive touch screen operation. From automatic recognition of elements to performing tolerance calculations and automatic part program execution, it is a perfect addition to the portfolio.” The QM-Fit is a compact, fully automated digital smart vision system. It requires minimal intervention. Simply place your part on the stage and QM-Fit captures its dimensions instantly. It has been engineered so that even thin parts, small components or multiple features on the same piece can be inspected quickly. WHAT MAKES QM-FIT STAND OUT? Several features make this machine particularly useful for modern engineering environments. Automatic element detection recognises circles, lines and other basic geometric features automatically, often with a single tap. You do not have to specify every element in advance, which saves time and reduces the risk of human error.
Caliper Snap ensures that when placing virtual rulers near part edges or circles, the rulers snap automatically to the correct feature. Instead of tediously aligning crosshairs or manual guides, the system helps you get reliable measurements much faster. A long focal depth lens keeps parts with uneven surfaces, protrusions or depressions up to 36 mm, in sharp focus, so there is no need to refocus each time if you switch from thin to tall features. A 20MP high-resolution camera alongside up to 100× magnified views enables very detailed inspection, not just for basic dimensions but also for fine detail where clarity counts. The user interface combines a responsive touchscreen with physical buttons, including a HOME key that gives quick access to commonly used settings and calibration. It is simple to use, even when wearing gloves, and supports swipe and flick gestures to make navigation fast and intuitive.
Measurements in seconds, not minutes
Ahead of Advanced Engineering, we met with Darren Chambers, Product Manager – Major Instruments at Mitutoyo UK , to talk about their latest smart vision system, the QM-Fit. It is designed to take the friction out of shop floor precision measurement. Engineers are being invited to the Mitutoyo stand to see it live, try it out, and find out why it could be a game-changer for their quality and inspection processes. “QM-Fit has been built for speed, accuracy and simplicity,” Darren tells us. “We knew there was a real need among engineers for a vision system that works without lengthy setup or specialist training. This system aims to deliver accurate results in seconds, rather than minutes.”
